This operation is a part of the San Francisco Police Departments new concerted effort at targeting individuals driving under the influence.  This effort is made possible by a $106,000 grant awarded by the California Office of Transportation Safety to the City of San Francisco that requires the money to be directed at specifically targeting impaired drivers as well as educating the public about the risks associated with drunk or drugged driving.

DUI’s are among some of the US’s deadliest crimes.  There were 791 deaths and over 24,000 injuries that resulted from DUI’s in 2010 alone.  In 2011, there were 27 fatalities and 1,796 injuries in San Francisco alone.  Officials estimate that publicizing such DUI check points will drop car accidents related to DUI’s by 20 percent.  Furthermore, these official contend that publicizing and organizing such checkpoints is one of the most cost effective ways to combat the crime.  Director of Traffic Safety Christopher J. Murphy stated that such checkpoints “have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we have witnessed from 2006 to 2010 in California.”
